Background of the study
Digital visual content is a potent driver of linguistic innovation in online communication. In Nigeria, Instagram and Facebook serve as platforms where the integration of images and text leads to the emergence of novel morphological forms. Instagram posts, often characterized by concise captions paired with striking imagery, promote the creation of abbreviations, emojis, and creative word blends as part of users’ lexical repertoire. Conversely, Facebook posts, with longer text and embedded visuals, encourage more traditional morphological structures enriched with digital neologisms (Ibrahim, 2024). This comparative study aims to analyze how visual stimuli influence word formation and morphological adaptations in these digital environments, reflecting broader cultural trends and social interactions (Adeola, 2023). The research seeks to document and compare the morphological innovations emerging on both platforms, providing insights into the interplay between visual content and language evolution in Nigeria (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although digital visual content is known to influence language, there is limited comparative research on its effect on morphology in Nigerian social media. Current studies often neglect the impact of imagery on word formation, focusing solely on textual analysis. This gap limits our understanding of how platforms like Instagram and Facebook drive morphological innovation and hinders the development of theoretical models to explain digital language change (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the study
1. To compare morphological patterns on Instagram and Facebook.
2. To analyze the influence of visual elements on word formation.
3. To develop models for digital morphological change.
Research questions
1. What morphological innovations are evident on Instagram versus Facebook?
2. How do visual elements affect word structure?
3. What implications do these innovations have for language evolution?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of digital visual content on Nigerian morphology, contributing to our understanding of language evolution in digital contexts. The findings will aid educators and policymakers in adapting to new linguistic trends (Ibrahim, 2024; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing Instagram and Facebook posts by Nigerian users, excluding other digital platforms and offline interactions.
